What the Foundation Doesn't Fund

NOTE: For details on allowable budget items for a research project under the 21st Century Science Initiative, visit this link. For all other unsolicited requests, consult the list below.

  • Undergraduate tuition, stipends, scholarships, fellowships, research or travel expenses, or other educational expenses.

  • Graduate or postdoctoral stipends, scholarships, fellowships, research or travel expenses, or other educational expenses. (Exceptions include requests that qualify as allowable budget items as part of specific Research Award applications).

  • Expenses tied to projects whose explicit goal is the publication of a book or other bound volume (although publication of a book or special issue of a journal may be one goal or outcome of work funded by the Foundation).

  • Expenses tied to the establishment or day-to-day running of a journal or small press.

  • Scientific meetings or workshops other than those JSMF puts together or which are affiliated with Collaborative Activity Awards.

  • JSMF does not award ongoing operational support for university-based centers, programs, or institutes.

  • JSMF does not underwrite professional society meetings or specific sessions at such meetings.

  • JSMF does not underwrite or sponsor charitable functions, museum exhibitions, or similar causes or events.


  • JSMF does not make charitable donations to individuals and organizations.
