James S. McDonnell Scholar Awards

Deadline: The deadline has passed. The deadline for applications and letters of support was Monday, April 7, 2008, 3:59 PM CDT.

Please note: Applicants submitting applications to the 2008 Scholar Awards will not be eligible to submit applications to future JSMF Award competitions until 2011. [Read the Policy]

Scholar Awards: Eligibility

Researchers with current grant support from JSMF are not eligible to apply for a Scholar Award until all prior JSMF grant funds have been fully expended and a final grant report has been received and approved by the foundation office.

  • JSMF funds internationally. Applications must be sponsored by a nonprofit institution as defined by Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Tax Code. Institutions outside the United States should read carefully the additional information on tax requirements available here.
  • There are no restrictions on the number of submissions that may be sponsored by a particular institution. However, considering the small number of grants awarded each year, we do ask that institutions limit their sponsorships to applications meeting both the letter and the spirit of the Foundation's guidelines.
  • Eligible Scholar Award nominees must have completed all doctoral, postdoctoral, or fellowship training and hold an independent research position. Nominees in the earlier career stages are encouraged. However, James S. McDonnell Scholar Awards are not intended to serve as career development awards -- the intent is to allow creative researchers to pursue important research.
  • Senior scientists are welcome to apply but must put forward a compelling argument as to why funds are needed above and beyond traditional research support. In particular, senior scientists should describe how a JSM Scholar Award will be used to advance new research directions or to revisit research questions requiring a fresh approach.

We must emphasize that this is an international program for a limited number of awards. It is anticipated that competition for the awards will be intense. An international advisory review panel composed of scientists and scholars in the relevant fields will evaluate all applications that meet the eligibility requirements.
