The James S. McDonnell Foundation believes in having answers to your questions before you even ask them. On this page, you will find various instructions and information on grant management and development based on past inquiries to better help you understand our systems. If you cannot find an answer here, you are welcome to contact the Foundation with any inquiry you may have at grant-admin@jsmf.org.

Submit a No Cost Extension RequestChanges in grant budgets do not require approval from JSMF for Allowable Budget Items . Grant funds should be used consistent with the grantee's policies and to support the goals of the proposed research.
If the intra-institutional contact for a JSMF grant has changed, send an email to us with the old and new information.
JSMF allows grant transfers between qualified institutions if such transfers serve to advance the original intention of the grant.
JSMF considers grants with 5% or less of the total grant remaining amount to be fully expended.
Grantees must use remaining funds on related research expenses (publications fees, data entry, dissemination, research travel, etc.). Reach out to the JSMF Grants Manager (grant-admin@jsmf.org) for further information on how to report this on the final financial report.
Some examples of scenarios related to this policy are:
JSMF supports the use of Constraints on Generality (COG) statements that identify the interpretative limitations resulting from population sampling, the use of experimental stimuli, and the influence of context on research findings. Use of these statements in primary research articles can contribute to a more cumulative science by helping other researchers to replicate studies and by encouraging researchers to undertake follow-on studies that test the boundary conditions of the original finding. JSMF encourages its grantee to include COG statements in all research descriptions and publications.

Q. Due to the coronavirus crisis, is supplemental funding available for current grants?
A. No. Supplemental funding is not available should the charging of other allowable costs result in a shortage of funds to carry out the research project.
Q. I need to move funds from one budget category
to another. Is this possible?
A. Yes. Changes in grant budgets for Allowable Budget Items do not require approval from JSMF. Grant funds should be used consistent with the grantee's policies and to support the goals of the proposed research.
