How We Work

Grant Opportunities

The James S. McDonnell Foundation (JSMF) directs its resources toward initiatives that advance economic mobility for St. Louisans facing the starkest disparities. While we may consider select proposals submitted through our website, most of our grants are awarded to 501(c)(3) and other tax-exempt organizations identified by our staff.

What We Do Not Fund

To ensure that our resources have the greatest impact, JSMF generally does not fund:

  • Grants to Individuals – We are unable to provide direct financial assistance to individuals, except in specific circumstances outlined in certain grant programs.
  • General Operating Support—While we invest in organizations’ long-term success, we do not provide unrestricted funding for day-to-day operations unless they are directly tied to a funded initiative.
  • Religious Programming – We do not fund programs that primarily promote religious doctrines, though we may support faith-based organizations providing secular community services.
  • Basic Scientific Research – While JSMF has a history of funding scientific research, our current mission focuses on inclusive economic growth and mobility, rather than basic research.
  • Projects Outside St. Louis – Our funding is dedicated to the St. Louis region, with an emphasis on St. Louis City and North St. Louis County. Organizations outside of St. Louis may apply, but their work must directly benefit our priority populations.

JSMF is committed to strategic, long-term investment in St. Louis. Our funding approach is driven by evidence, collaboration, and a focus on impact to help build prosperity that works for St. Louis.

Our Commitment to Funded Partners

At JSMF, we believe that true impact happens through partnership. Our partners — community-based organizations, nonprofits, and cross-sector collaborators — are at the heart of our mission to improve economic mobility for St. Louisans facing the starkest disparities.

We are committed to building strong, respectful relationships that foster collaboration, transparency, and shared learning. Our role is to support, not prescribe, ensuring that those closest to the work have the resources they need to drive change.

What You Can Expect From JSMF

  • Respectful and Open Engagement – We will listen first and approach every conversation with humility, candor, and a spirit of true partnership.
  • Clarity and Transparency – We will communicate our funding priorities, decision-making process, and timelines clearly, so you know what to expect at every stage.
  • Continuous Learning and Improvement – We value feedback and are committed to learning from our partners to refine our approach and enhance our impact.

We welcome ongoing conversations and insights from our partners — your work informs and strengthens ours. Through open dialogue and shared learning, we strive to build a more inclusive and equitable St. Louis, where prosperity works for everyone.
