Summary

Using cognitive neuroscience to design rehabilitation strategies for patients with neurological injuries has been hampered both by the small number of rehabilitation professionals with either formal or informal training in cognitive neuroscience, and by the small number of basic cognitive neuroscientists interested in pursuing clinically-relevant projects.

The researchers suggest that one way to encourage broader interest in such research is to encourage collaboration between researchers already engaged in clinical rehabilitation research with basic scientists. To facilitate this collaboration, the researchers will use a workshop organized around the issues of learning and cortical reorganization following injury to motor and sensory systems.
