Summary | This collaborative team will investigate why some COVID-19 patients, maintained for lengthy periods on anesthetic protocols while mechanically ventilated, are showing slowed and delayed recoveries. In the absence of any identifiable structural brain lesions, it is possible that patient recoveries are being affected by low blood oxygenation due to inadequate ventilation combined with post-anesthesia effects. As the number of patients is continuously rising and could possibly peak again this fall, the team hopes to identify better treatment regimens that 1) improve recovery outcomes and 2) can better support patients experiencing delayed recoveries. As of now, there is limited knowledge regarding how best to structures intermediate and long-term care to maximize patient outcomes. |
